Over the past 130 years the choir has built up an international reputation, and has enjoyed continuous successes, awards and great prestige.\u00a0 Enrique Azurza assumed the role of Artistic Director in April 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The choir has worked with many distinguished international conductors, amongst them Valery Gergiev, Rafael Fr\u00fchbeck de Burgos, Antoni Ros Marb\u00e1, Juanjo Mena, V\u00edctor Pablo P\u00e9rez, Christoph Spering, Yaron Traub, Erik Nielsen, Mstislav Rostropovich, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Michel Plasson, Fern\u00e1ndez Arb\u00f3s, Vladimir Golschmann, Ataulfo Argenta, Jascha Horenstein, Od\u00f3n Alonso, Patrick Juzeau, Miguel Angel G\u00f3mez Mart\u00ednez, Moshe Atzmon and Theo Alc\u00e1ntara, amongst many others. Recent and future highlights include performances of Mahler\u2019s Second Symphony and a staged production of Britten\u2019s War Requiem, under the artistic direction of renowned director Calixto Bieito.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16424 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coraldebilbao.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/coral-bilbao-concierto1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Bilbao Choral Society\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coraldebilbao.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/coral-bilbao-concierto1-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.coraldebilbao.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/coral-bilbao-concierto1-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>The Bilbao Choral Society performed the Spanish premieres of many of the great choral masterpieces, such as Verdi\u2019s <em>Requiem<\/em>, Wagner\u2019s <em>Das Liebesmahl der Apostel<\/em>, Brahms\u2019 <em>Ein Deutsches Requiem<\/em>, Mendelssohn\u2019s <em>Elijah<\/em>, Mozart\u2019s <em>Vesperae solennes de confessore<\/em>, Franck\u2019s <em>Les B\u00e9atitudes<\/em>, Borodin\u2019s <em>Polovtsian Dances<\/em>, Orff\u2019s <em>Carmina Burana<\/em>, Vaughan Williams\u2019 <em>Hodie<\/em>, Ligeti\u2019s <em>Requiem<\/em> and Britten\u2019s <em>Spring Symphony<\/em>. They are regularly approached to take part in projects featuring great works of the symphonic-choral repertoire, with some of their most recent projects including Beethoven\u2019s Ninth Symphony, Mahler\u2019s Second Symphony, Handel\u2019s <em>Messiah<\/em>, Dvorak\u2019s <em>Stabat Mater<\/em>, Bruckner\u2019s <em>Te Deum<\/em> and Faur\u00e9\u2019s <em>Requiem<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They have collaborated with international orchestras such as the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, Das Neue Orchester, National Orchestra of Bordeaux Aquitaine, l\u2019Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre Symphonique de Lyon, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, Aachen Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, Orchestre Lamoureux, Orchestra Wiener Akademie and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, as well as with almost every professional orchestra in Spain. They have a prominent presence in Bilbao\u2019s annual Musika-M\u00fasica festival, which is modeled on Nantes\u2019 <em>La Folle Journ\u00e9e<\/em>.\u00a0 The choir has a strong commitment to the performance and promotion of music from the Basque region of Spain, and they performed the world premiere of Ar\u00e1mbarri\u2019s <em>Castilla<\/em>, Escudero\u2019s <em>Illeta<\/em>, Karmelo Bernaola\u2019s <em>Euskadi. Euskarari Abestia<\/em>, Guridi\u2019s <em>Mirentxu<\/em> and <em>Amaya,<\/em> and Escudero\u2019s <em>Gernika<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst their recordings are Granados\u2019 <em>Goyescas<\/em> with the Orquesta de Cadaqu\u00e9s and Gianandrea Noseda, Guridi\u2019s <em>Amaya<\/em> with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, and a CD dedicated to Basque composers and produced by EMI, with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and its former Principal Conductor Michel Plasson.<\/p>\n<p>Their latest recordings include Puccini\u2019s <em>Turandot<\/em>, recorded on the Naxos label with the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alexander Rahbari, and a recording featuring works by Pablo Sorozabal with the Basque National Orchestra and its former Artistic Director Cristian Mandeal. \u00a0They have also recorded the zarzuela \u201cEl Caser\u00edo\u201d by Guridi, together with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra under its former Artistic Director Juanjo Mena.<\/p>\n<div class='dt-sc-hr '><\/div>\n<h2>The choristers<\/h2>\n<div class='dt-sc-hr '><\/div>\n<p><strong>FIRST SOPRANOS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Calvo Ibarreche, Mar\u00eda Camelia &#8211;
