IÑAKI MORENO, Conductor

The choir of Bilbao-Bilboko Koral Elkartea was founded in 1886 to sing music in general and choir music in particular. Over the period of 100 years the choir obtained successes and received awards, gaining prestige all over Spain.



The choir masters that have conducted the group since its beginnings with Cleto Zabala include Aureliano Valle, Jesús Guridi, Arturo Inchausti, Timoteo Urrengoechea, J. M. Olaizola, Modesto Arana, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Juan Cordero, Urbano Ruiz Laorden, Julen Ezkurra and, from 1984 to 2006, Gorka Sierra. This function is today carried out by Iñaki Moreno



The list of conductors with whom it has sung includes Fernández Arbós, Pérez Casas, Wladimir Golscham, Jesús Arámbarri, Lamote de Grignon, Ataulfo Argenta, Jasecha Horenstein, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Odón Alonso, Colman Pearce, Patrick Juzeau, Ros Marbá, Miguel Angel Gómez Martínez, Moshe Atzmon, Mstislav Rostropovich, Theo Alcántara, Michel Plasson, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Jan Lathan-Koenig, Arturo Tamayo, Aldo Ceccato, Hans Graf, Juanjo Mena, Klaus Weise, Gianandrea Noseda, Elio Boncompagni, Michaël Schönwadt, George Prete, Alexander Rahbari, John Nelson, Uriel Segal, Josep Pons, Jerzy Semkow, Alexandre Dmitriev, Yutaka Sado, Martin Haselböck and Michiyoshi Inoue, among others.

In Spain, it has premiered works as important as the oratorio The Holy Supper of the Apostles by Wagner, A German Requiem by Brahms, Solemn Vespers of the Confessor by Mozart, Verdi’s Requiem, the oratorio Elijah by Mendelssohn, Psalm by Smith, The Beatitudes by Franck, Prince Igor by Borodin, Carmina Burana by Orff, Hodie by Vaughan-Williams and Ligeti’s Requiem. Its world premieres include the poem Castilla by Arámbarri, the cantata Illeta by Escudero, the oratorio Gernika by Gorka Sierra and Euskadi. Euskarari Abestia by Karmelo Bernaola.
The choir has also sung numerous musicals and has premiered the operas Maitena by Colín, Mendi Mendiyan by Usandizaga, Lide eta Txidor by Santos Intxausti, Mirentxu and Amaya by Guridi and Gernika by Escudero. In 1991, it also took part in the world premiere of Medea by Mikis Theodorakis.

The position of conductor of the choir was taken over by Gorka Sierra in 1984 and marked the beginning of a new period in which it has sung at the leading festivals and concert halls in Spain. At the beginning of 2005, Iñaki Moreno, who had worked as the assistant conductor of the choir since 1995, was appointed as its conductor. The group has sung with almost all of Spain's orchestras, as well as the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Portuguese Broadcasting Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Bordeaux-Aquitaine, the Toulouse Capitole Orchestra, the Lyon Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Aachen Symphony Orchestra, the Paris Chamber Orchestra, the Lamoureux Orchestra, the Wiener Akademie Orchestra, the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphonic Orchestra.

Its recordings include the Goyesque operas by Granados, with the Cadaqués Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda, and Amaya by Guridi, with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra. Together with the Toulouse Capitole National Orchestra and its conductor Michel Plasson, the choir recorded a CD dedicated to Basque composers on the EMI label.

Its latest published works include the opera Turandot by Puccini, recorded with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Málaga and its conductor Alexander Rahbari for NAXOS; various works by Pablo Sorozabal with the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra and its conductor Cristian Mandeal, with CLAVES; the zarzuela titled El Caserío by Guridi, with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and its conductor Juanjo Mena, with MARCO POLO; and the Concert for the Senate to Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, with a programme of sacred music sung a capella.

The Choir of Bilbao has been awarded the Gold Medal in Fine Arts (1986), the Medal of Honour of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (2005) and the Gold Medal of the City of Bilbao (2007), among others.
